What is the most suitable type of window frames for residential homes?

By Eco Bau

In this article, I will provide you with clear and simple information about the advantages and disadvantages of specific types of window frames — such as Casement, Sliding, Pocket, and Lift-and-Slide — regardless of whether they are PVC frames, aluminum frames, or wooden frames.

What needs should a window frame fulfill?

Window frames are required to meet certain needs such as Thermal Insulation, Sound Insulation, Security, and Functionality. All of these needs — except for functionality — tend to evolve over time as living conditions change. For example, the need for security in the 1980s was not as high as it is today. The same applies to thermal insulation due to climate change and the rising cost of oil and electricity. Today, the need for thermal insulation has increased dramatically compared to the past and will continue to rise in the future. Therefore, when considering the installation of window frames in our home today, we must think ahead and anticipate future conditions — making the right choices now so that even after 20 or 30 years, our window frames continue to meet expectations and provide satisfactory levels of thermal insulation, sound insulation, and security.

These four factors — Thermal Insulation, Sound Insulation, Security, and Functionality — are what will determine the type of window frame we choose, depending on which needs are most important in our particular case, mainly due to the location of our home. That’s because each type of frame (Casement, Sliding, Pocket, and Lift-and-Slide) performs differently in each of these categories. For example, if our home is located in the center of Athens on a busy street, we should focus on Sound Insulation due to noise pollution, as well as on Security because of the increased crime that may exist in the area. On the other hand, if our home is in Arachova or Karpenisi, where low temperatures prevail in these mountainous areas, we will need window frames with particularly high thermal insulation performance.

Answer the following questions, which will help you understand which categories of needs are most important in your case.

  1. Is your home located in the countryside, a flatland area, a mountainous region, or an urban environment?
  2. Is it situated in a noisy area?
  3. Is it in a neighborhood with high crime rates?
  4. Also, it’s important to consider whether, in some areas of your home, it’s impossible for windows or balcony doors to open inward due to various reasons.

At this point, I’d like to explain each type of window frame — where they excel, where they fall short, and why — regardless of whether they are PVC, aluminum, or wooden frames.

  • Casement window frames: These are the only systems that offer maximum thermal insulation, sound insulation, and security. They deliver top thermal performance because their seals use gaskets and have no leaks (thermal transmittance coefficient of 1.3 W/m²K). Casement windows close hermetically, and when shut, the home is practically airtight. To ventilate the space, you need to use the tilt function. Casement frames also offer maximum security thanks to their multi-point perimeter locking system, which comes with certified anti-burglary protection.

The only real disadvantage — and only in the case of serious space constraints — is functionality. For example, if the room is too small and it’s physically impossible for the frame to open inward, then and only then should you consider other solutions like sliding windows. However, by choosing sliding frames, you may gain in functionality but lose significantly in terms of thermal insulation, sound insulation, and security — as will be explained in more detail below.

Casement frames can be made in very small or very large sizes, from windows to balcony doors, with one or more sashes, even combined with fixed glass panels. Their prices are especially attractive due to the high level of automation in their production.

  • Sliding window frames: These systems have the advantage that the sashes do not open inward like casement windows but slide over each other, which is functionally preferable in cases where there are serious space limitations.

However, the levels of thermal and sound insulation they provide are not satisfactory. This is because their sealing is achieved using brush seals, which allow for losses (thermal transmittance coefficient of 3.9 W/m²K).

In addition, the security they offer is limited due to the locking mechanism, which is not perimeter-based and locks at only two points.
  • Pocket (recessed) window frames: Pocket systems have quite a history — they emerged in the early 1980s when developers, aiming to reduce construction costs and maximize apartment units, built homes with such limited space that it was impossible for frames to open inward. As a result, they used sliding or pocket frames, which open by sliding into the wall cavity, saving interior space.

While this may be functionally convenient, it comes with several drawbacks. Like sliding frames, pocket systems use brush seals, which result in significant losses in thermal and sound insulation (thermal transmittance coefficient of 3.9 W/m²K).

They also provide inadequate security for the same reason: the locking mechanism is not perimeter-based and only locks at two points.

Another issue is the lack of insulation inside the wall cavity where the frame slides — creating thermal bridges and potential energy loss.

Finally, their cost is considerably higher than that of casement frames, as they are considered a custom construction requiring more complex design and installation (false casings, trim covers, etc.).
  • Lift-and-slide window frames: These systems offer all the advantages of casement frames in terms of thermal insulation, sound insulation, and security. Like casement windows, they use rubber gaskets for sealing, and their locking mechanisms are perimeter-based with multiple locking points and certified anti-burglary protection. They also support the tilt function for ventilation.

The key difference lies in their operation: instead of opening inward, lift-and-slide frames slide sideways like traditional sliding systems.

Lift-and-slide frames combine the sealing and performance of casement systems with the space-saving functionality of sliding systems.

Their price is significantly higher and they are primarily intended for large windows or balcony doors ranging from 1.6 to 3.5 meters in width.
