4 things you should know so that the windows you buy provide you with 60% or more energy savings, guaranteed

In order for the windows you purchase to be truly energy-efficient—and not just in name—you must pay close attention to the following 4 things:

  1. The thermal transmittance (U-value) of the frame profiles
  2. The thermal transmittance (U-value) of the glazing
  3. The perimeter locking mechanism
  4. Proper installation, including the use of suitable sealing and insulating materials

Here is a breakdown below:

  • You need to understand the importance of the thermal transmittance coefficient Uf, which refers to the frame, and Ug, which refers to the glass panes. These two coefficients determine the thermal losses of your window frames. The lower these values, the fewer thermal losses you will experience.

    To illustrate:
    A typical aluminum window frame without thermal break has a Uf = 7 W/m²K, while a synthetic (PVC) frame series has Uf = 1.3 W/m²K. This clearly shows the significant difference in thermal insulation between standard aluminum frames and PVC frames.

    Of course, there are also aluminum systems with thermal break, with a Uf value around 2.9 W/m²K, but they come at a significantly higher cost and **still cannot match the performance of PVC frames with Uf = 1.3 or even 0.7.

You should also be aware of the thermal transmittance coefficient of the glass panes.

A standard double-glazed unit 4/16/4 has a Ug = 2.9 W/m²K, while a double-glazed energy-efficient unit 4/16/4 with low-emissivity (low-e) coating and argon gas in the gap achieves a much lower Ug = 1.1 W/m²K.

This shows how wide the variations can be from one glazing type to another—and, as a result, from one window system to another—when it comes to the total thermal transmittance (Uf of the frame + Ug of the glazing). This greatly affects the energy savings that a window can offer, depending on whether it’s made from standard aluminum, aluminum with thermal break, or PVC, and depending on the type of glass used.

Therefore, selecting the right type of frame with a low Uf value, combined with energy-efficient glazing with a low Ug, gives you a powerful combination.
Only then can we truly classify a product as an energy-efficient window—one that significantly reduces energy consumption and, consequently, saves money.

  • Absolutely essential is the use of a perimeter locking mechanism instead of a simple conventional one. This is because the perimeter mechanism locks the frame at up to 18 points, resulting in better fitting—meaning the rubber seals sit more tightly and securely, preventing water, air, or cold from entering.

    Proper installation and precise leveling of the energy-efficient frames are also of great importance, ensuring optimal fitting all around.

    Equally important during the installation of energy-efficient frames is the use of the right sealing and insulating materials between the frame and the masonry. Specifically, the use of polyurethane foam is a must to fill the gaps on the right, left, and top sides between the frame and the wall. This provides additional thermal and sound insulation.

    At the bottom side of the frame, where it rests on the marble sill, neutral silicone or waterproofing grout must be applied so that your energy-efficient frames will never allow water or air to pass through.
